Learning tastes MAGIC with a crystal wand!

Wooden stick (we like to use kebab skewers)
Glass jars
Clothes pegs

First mix three cups of sugar with 1 cup of water and bring  to the boil, stirring all the time.

Keep adding sugar until you have a saturated solution (no more sugar will dissolve). Then it’s ready!

Once it’s cooled a bit (always be careful with hot pans and liquids), pour the sugar solution into a clean glass jar for each wand.

Now, if you want, you can add whatever food colouring you like to make different coloured wands.

Wet your wooden stick in the sugar solution and roll it in a little dry sugar to help get the crystals started (this is called ‘seeding’ the sugar).

Grip the wooden stick using a clothes peg at either side, then balance the pegs across the jar so your stick hangs down in the solution but doesn’t touch the sides or the bottom.

Over the next three to five days beautiful sugar crystals will magically form and hey presto – it’s a wand!

You may find that crystals form on the bottom and sides of the jar and top of the solution, this can stop the crystals forming on your wand. To stop this, every couple of days; scrape the excess crystals away and pour the solution into a clean jar before transferring your wand to start the growing again!

The recipe works really well with granulated sugar, but try experimenting with different sugars for different crystal sizes!
