The Story Behind the Bake

A recent family holiday to Japan sparked a delightful adventure for me, especially when it came to finding new recipe inspiration! So, I decided to recreate something special I tried there—a melon bun! It was so much fun to look back on happy memories and delicious treats!

Melon bun in JapanMelon buns, while originating in Japan, share similarities with Hong Kong's popular pineapple buns, although, they have a lighter texture and a firmer cookie top. Despite its name, the melon bun contains no melon; instead, its name comes from the distinctive crisscross pattern on top of the bun. Whether enjoyed plain or paired with cream or ice cream, the melon bun shows off Japanese tradition and Asian culinary innovation.
